Successful Separation: Planning and Conducting Employee Terminations

This 3-4 hour hands-on workshop is designed for managers and support personnel who are involved with conducting involuntary separation meetings (due to reduction-in-force, downsizing, layoffs, restructuring or performance issues). The learning can be applied to large-scale reductions or to termination of a single employee.

The workshop and materials teach the skills and steps for these terminations, with special emphasis on handling the employee notification meeting.  This training treats employee terminations as a work process, and lays out the details and next steps the participants need to complete before the event.

The 1st phase begins with the PLANNING element of the separations, and allows the participants to understand the successful separation process, and how to create a team and process to facilitate the meetings.

The 2nd phase involves the MEETING itself, including the 5 essential steps to conducting the meeting, managing common employee reactions and responding to tough questions.

The 3rd phase covers the elements sometimes forgotten in involuntary separations: AFTER the employee notifications. We start with the planning team's debriefing session. We then cover how to best handle the remaining employees and notify key customers, vendors and investors, with an emphasis on minimal business disruption.



TARGET AUDIENCE:

·          Senior and Executive-level managers: leaders who are ultimately responsible for ensuring that the employee terminations are executed well with little or no harm to the company, its assets or employees.

·          Line managers: both inexperienced or newly promoted managers/supervisors as well as veteran managers who face the task of terminating employees.

·          Human Resources professionals: both exempt and non-exempt professionals who need to coordinate and collaborate with line managers, senior management, displaced employees, remaining employee and outplacement firms.

OUTCOMES:

After taking this training session, participants will be able to:

·          Define their role, activities and responsibilities as a member of the Successful Separation Team

·          Construct a detailed timeline and assemble an effective team to plan and execute the notifications

·          Incorporate safety, security, and liability concerns into their plan

·          Prepare for the employee meeting: develop an exact script and plan the transitions through the 5 Steps of a Successful Separation Meeting

·          Adjust their own personal communication style to deliver the separation message to the employee in a way that meets the employee, corporate and the manager's own needs

·          Identify 6 types of employee responses to the news, and have tools to manage the responses effectively

·          Use suggested answers to customize answers to Tough Questions

·          Discuss the terminations with remaining employees and outside contacts in a way that minimizes disruption and refocuses them on getting their work done

·          Enjoy increased confidence about their ability to conduct employee separations, and decrease their stress level regarding the upcoming task
